A SEARCH FOR INNER CHRISTIANITY Many years ago, aware of a certain luminosity underlying certain older sections of the Christian church, with an inner stillness which was often belied by its behaviour and always devalued by modern thought; intrigued by the claims of certain sources that they represented a form of Esoteric Christianity, and confirmed at the failures in the West either to prove this connection or to manifest any effective way of maintaining the wellbeing of the inner individual, I began in the early 1980’s to take my search for truth not only beyond the boundaries of Western thought, but physically beyond the boundaries of the West as we now know it. Despite the fact that I had for long been dedicated to rediscovering such truths and sharing the results, this search was very much an individual quest. It took me to Mount Athos, to certain monasteries which have made me welcome for almost a quarter of a century; to one elder in particular, whose message to the world is repeated on a page directly following this; to certain individuals in Europe and the Middle East who represented a stream some of whom had for nearly two centuries been conducting a search similar to my own. I found failures, and I found successes. From years visiting the monasteries, after years, I found my way to one man of deep inner experience. Even later another such man found me in a wordless experience like that famous meeting in Russia with Saint Seraphim. | I learned both from the search and quite directly from some of the men I met. To my mind, this search was surprisingly successful; so successful that I am only just beginning to put into practice everything I learned; nor have I yet been able to make it - and the possible living connections it has opened up - readily available to others. Aware as early as 1996 that time was running out in this regard, I decided then to make a report to others on the same road, and with this in mind gave to a promising conference in the South of England a talk entitled: ESOTERIC CHRISTIANITY OUT IN THE OPEN.* This was intended to serve as an initial ‘Research Report’ on my search. In the event, I had insufficient time to organise my data, and even less time to present it. The presentation I made at the conference was therefore seriously incomplete. Heckling by Gurdjieff-obsessed men who had not recognized that G had attempted to awaken something and instead appeared to believe that he had spoken the final word or even a new Gospel, made the limited time for my talk almost useless! This is part of an ongoing attempt to remedy that deficiency, to add a surprising amount of important information discovered since that date, and to present it a little more clearly. Such experiences should be shared! |
'Elders' like Paisios are the bearers of the Inner Christian tradition. Such men - and women - are defined not by their level in the Church hierarchy, but by their very being, the result of long years of asceticism - what we now call work on themselves. It is this which gives them a deep and demonstrable consciousness of their own inner life and an openness to the divine. With their death their influence becomes stronger, often giving, particularly to those who 'have inner eyes able to see it' evidence of their survival after death. They do not teach doctrine, but help us towards understanding. |
