1. Instructions for video-conference
connection with Praxis
Video meetings with active Praxis Research Institute
groups are now proceeding, initially using a Mac computer with iChat
software. For these to be successful, considerable care is needed to
choose and position camera, screen, microphone and loudspeakers in
relation to seating. Somebody - probably the owner of the computer -
should take on the role of operator, and for this should practice a
connection with us here at some other time. Contact Stephen Hanney at
Praxis, and he can run a practice session with you.
The aim is to get clear sound and full visibility.
-------------------
Make sure everybody is informed well in advance of the
time of meeting: this will become increasingly important in the next few
months, when we hope to begin monthly shared meetings with all groups
that wish to and are able to do so.
-------------------
Use the following check list to simplify things.
-
Locate screen far enough to allow everybody to see
it: in current technology set screen resolution to 800 x 600 for the
best image size to give everybody a reasonable image at the chosen
distance.
-
For groups of 2 or 3 you may be able to use the
microphone built into the camera.
-
For larger groups, place the camera so that everyone
in the group is visible ‘on camera’. This may mean it will be too
far to use that microphone. In this case, place a reasonably good
non-directional microphone exactly midway between the person
operating the computer and the semicircle of students.
Keep spare batteries nearby for loudspeakers and
microphones.
Remember to:
Check that speakers and microphone (if necessary) have a recent
battery.
Switch on speakers and microphone.
-------------------
We are currently working out details for sending the same
messages to groups that only have access to Windows computers.
