This Commentary describes how the tradition of Prayer of the Heart, of putting the Lord first not only in our lives but in our minds and in our hearts, leads in time to a different way of life. It is told (REF) how Christ once told Martha that Mary, in her prayers, had found the 'better part.' Our Lord referred in this to an understanding of the faith which was based on a tradition of persistent inner prayer. Long ago in our terms, Christianity shaped this impulse into a powerful therapeutic tradition, but until recently, this has been as well hidden as if it were a jealously guarded secret. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth than the idea that this truth was kept secret. It is an ancient therapeutic teaching that says, simply, that the way to be healed is to turn to God; to put the Lord in first place in our lives, as did the Mary of the Gospel story. |
