2.  Abstract of - the Philosophers of God

It has been said that there was no new philosophy throughout many centuries of the Middle Ages

This statement is a direct result of the fact that the early fathers of the church were progressively ignored after the great closing-in of the Western mind that occurred with the Reformation. It is not now generally understood that many of the early saints were significant philosophers in their own right, and that in fact in their own world philosophical thought had actually transcended that of Periclean Athens.

'Philosophers of God' is our name for the spiritual fathers who played this important role in the early church, so that for many centuries they appear to have dominated not only the spiritual but also the cultural climate of the Greek Oikumene, which, as the Eastern half of the Roman Empire, dominated that end of the Mediterranean during its first Christian Millennium. In that culture and that time, almost unknown to the modern Western world, philosophical thought and spiritual practice were united in a way never seen in our 'modern' world. The most obvious result of this in our times is the paradoxical civilisation that now rules the West, with its great strengths and its equally monumental weaknesses, but this appears to be the result of accidental, probably political alternations to the original Christian impulse. Praxis Research Institute was formed to investigate this situation, and to work to recover and share whatever genuine knowledge and techniques that long-lost world can offer us today. This first stream of Praxis teaching does this primarily by translating and commenting, first on the writings of Gregory Palamas, and then on the other early fathers of the church, key figures in that millennium of saints whose teachings Saint Gregory defined and integrated.
