27. Abstract of: Praxis exists because of the spiritual crisis the of West

This page describes key conclusions drawn after nearly twenty years of research into the ancient inner teachings of Christian spirituality. In this Commentary we introduce some of the evidence that this declining spirituality was in fact one of the 'civilising factors' that shaped Western civilisation - and show how misunderstandings, compounded by political accidents, have re-shaped Western thought in ways that have led to the present 'Decline of the West' - a decline that few people are aware of.

For everyone who is aware that the spiritual dimension and its charismatic experiences, as well as the related disciplines, are real and important factors in human life, and particularly for those who are aware of the need for a stronger spiritual element in their own lives, it is necessary today that we begin to understand in depth not only the basic fact that the West is in an almost terminal spiritual decline that reaches from centuries-old monastic orders to the recently formed New Age esoteric schools. If we are to have any hope of remedying the situation, it is also necessary to understand not only that this decline is a significant factor in the changes occurring in the world today, but that it is rooted so far back in the history of Christendom that only by detailed understanding can we hope to improve the situation. There is hope of a resolution in the wider dissemination of esoteric disciplines such as the early Christian therapeutic tradition, and the sudden raising of one of its main rediscoverers - Hierotheos Vlachos - to the rank of Metropolitan (a senior Archbishop) in the Greek church.
