IMPROVING INTERACTION BETWEEN SCIENCE & RELIGION

Some philosophical conclusions from the Praxis translation of

Saint Gregory Palamas' Triads.

It is important to understand, before reading Palamas' book, that in a world based on specialist skills and divergent disciplines which no longer speak one-another's language, Palamas' text, for all its concern with religion and spirituality, is equally helpful in the attempt to make necessary connections between these subjects and very different disciplines such as science, history, theology, and law. Even in translation, Saint Gregory Palamas' Triads touch with precision on that invisible link between these well-defined fields of truth which so often look so very different to us, one from another. This link touches very much on the concerns of Praxis Research Institute and its work over the past decade.

Firstly, it is clear that wherever Saint Gregory's text speaks with precision about the purification of the psyche, it can be treated as a work of psychology in almost the modern sense of the term, despite the fact that this subject is seen as being more the concern of science than religion. And if this is true, then before its claims can be accepted as valid in our time, they should be subject to a form of verification based on scientific methods of research. I believe this is a valid proposition, and that much of what I have observed in confirmation of these statements can be verified experimentally. The methods of research used would of course be subject to the proviso that to experimentally confirm the effects of certain processes and certain experiences has its own validity, even where it does not fully explain them, so that Palamas speaks of processes or activities that enter the human psyche and, on occasion, the body, while arising from a source outside both body and observable psyche. We must therefore seek to confirm these events in the effects of their passing through psyche and body, and not try to create fruitless investigations of the invisible.
