INNER LANGUAGE
In this icon of Saint Elizabeth, the circle centred
on the heart contains the circle centred on the head: so it is with the two kinds of
knowledge described by Saint Paul.
|
The
founder of Praxis Research Institute has been investigating the 'inner rules
and language' governing Christian spirituality since the beginning of the
1970's. Some time ago, this investigation led to the conclusion that those
rules formed a true discipline with definite knowledge that proved effective
in practice, and that it should be understood, taught, practiced, and even
extended on this assumption, as a technique augmented by the knowledge needed
to practice that technique, rather than offering it as a series of ideas
intended merely for intellectual discussion. It was on this assumption that
Praxis Research Institute was first formed as a non-profit corporation in
1992.
"For
it is not the hearers of the law who shall be saved," says
Paul, "but those who accomplish it." (Romans
2:13)
A
proper understanding of the ancient Greek word 'Esoterike...'
therefore not only describes Praxis Institute,
its researches, and its membership activities, but emphasises the simple
difference between the classical Christian inner tradition and much of
modern esotericism. But today this term is generally rather pretentious.
The term merely an aspect of Christianity, and was originally introduced by some of the
greatest of the fathers of the church to distinguish their thinking from
certain externally derived ideas taught by classical Greek philosophy
before the time of Christ. Now, through this website and its educational
and publishing programme, Praxis introduces those teachings which were never really secret, but were concerned with the inner or
psychological element of human nature - the real meaning of the Greek
Christian word esoterike.
True
traditional interior or esoteric knowledge, such as that of the early
fathers in the first millennium of the church ...
1.
Is
the exact knowledge underlying Christian spirituality
Spiritual growth on the early Christian model is an exact science. It is similar to Yoga or Zen but appropriate to a Christian way of life, and a form of education that has arisen from Christian origins. Diluting this knowledge with fashionable or New Age ideas renders it ineffective.
2. Is (literally) inarguable:
It is obtained in ways quite different from those of modern scientific knowledge, described by Saint Paul and Gregory Palamas as 'the Knowledge of God,' and obtained through the 'Wisdom of God.' Yet it is equally subject to inarguable laws. It therefore provides an alternative source of psychological data; data about the human psyche and the part it plays in life. This often provides valid data not available by investigation under Newtonian rules.
