Emergence of the Magnetic Centre

So that simple list from Theophan is enormously difficult to put into practice. Under modern conditions, it is nearly impossible. “But with God, all things are possible.”

So how can you put it into practice. How can you change what happens in your head, in your heart, and in your willing?  The basic method is implicit in this teaching. It is described in modern terms by saying that we can do this by forming what has recently been named a Magnetic Centre.  Magnetic Centre is an artificial or man-made centre or complex that can be formed in the psyche.

To summarise certain teachings of Boris Mouravieff, in the ordinary state of modern mind, each of the main forms of activity in the psyche – thought, feeling and sensory-motor – registers the actions of the other two in such a way in normal conditions the three centres are permanently interdependent. Each has formed habits of reacting or responding to every action in either of the other two.

Boris Mouravieff says of this that because of this, wherever the mental life of the individual is made up solely of various combinations of these three kinds of inner activity, man can neither have a pure thought, nor a pure feeling, nor can he take any final decision. In ordinary circumstances man cannot ignore these constant movements, and because of the mechanical way these ties operate in him, everything in him becomes mixed together.

This situation in which the different 'departments' of the psyche constantly disturb each other, is known as association. Its occurrence is generally accompanied by a varied amount of under-development and derangement in the different forms of activity in the psyche. It is thus the cause of all the doubts and inner conflicts in which man struggles so much.

In the psyche of ordinary individuals, these bundles of mechanical interconnections play a valuable role in human life. In the absence of true conscience they serve as the organ - or better still the instrument - of morality. In life in the world, in fact, the ‘soundless voice’ of the conscience of the Self is weak and rarely heard. As a result, ordinary human beings are almost constantly identified with the "I" of their Personalities, and can and often do act without taking the communications of this secret voice into account, even if they repent later. In practice, under these conditions, the mechanical ties between the three centres are the only brake on our ungovernable greed.
