In experience
The magnetisation of the
heart is a growth process. It is in this process that the monastic life and the
non-monastic path appear to differ. It is easier to understand this if we look
at it on a different scale to that of our previous diagram:
It begins when you begin to
be troubled by memories of a stillness, a clarity of thought and perception that
are usually missing from your life. But it is not just necessary
to remember that you have forgotten something. You must actively begin to look
for it. If you do so, this state emerges into greater clarity. It is the memory
of the natural state of mind which we had lost years ago, in infancy. For many
years we may simply be drawn to recover this memory. In doing so we will be
drawn into our own depths and as this happens we discover new riches within us:
stillness, light, warmth of heart, clarity of mind. This process may have begun
when we joined the church or some kind of mystical activity.
The next stage is one of
consciously building up this memory and immersing oneself in this state. At this point, one should concentrate on positive memories that you can
build on.
It is when it starts going
well that it all goes wrong. In modern man, these initial states normally
collapse as a result of the distortion and corruption accumulated in the modern
psyche. Eventually, as you begin to emerge from the initially good states, you
will find that you seem to evoke a resistance from the world. This has been given many names of varying accuracy, but sometimes the
reality may simply be that we have neglected the ordinary things of life: have
neglected our responsibilities, those we had taken on in the past and those God
has later given us; or we have not ‘paid our way’ in our lives, and life
becomes difficult; or we have neglected the people in our lives, and they become
difficult.
In those higher states, your
perceptions make you aware of your shortcomings. If you have not taken
responsibility in life, you will now try to take it. If you have been
unsympathetic and uncaring about people, you will try to act differently. Of
course, ego takes the credit, claiming any progress as its own work.
