Metanoia as a reversal of flow
A
clue is in the teaching given by G in the idea of the different
influences. In some
early teachings the word ‘spirit’ is used in exactly the same
meaning as the modern word influences. According to St. John Cassian, influence A is the spirit of
this world. Influence C
is the Spirit of God. To
acquire the Holy Spirit is a very great thing, but it begins when,
in G’s terms, influence B becomes influence C.
To
pass the obstacle of disappointment, new energies are needed, they
are needed in strength, and they are needed often.
But
where are these energies to come from?
The
answer was expressed in the system taught by G and O can be found clearly expressed in Christian
thought in specific teachings, for example, certain people will
recognize the following diagram, Figure 2 from P. D. Ouspensky's 'In
search of the Miraculous.'
The
Christian form of this truth was recently put differently by Eugraph
Kovalevsky, a Russian bishop in the esoteric tradition who was in
Paris at the same time as G,. (He described this reversal of the
energy flow as follows:) "Having
voluntarily stopped taking divine food, the human spirit has sought
another food, another form of breath, and has turned towards the
level of the psyche, giving birth to our civilizations as it did so.
... The psyche, the soul, is already weakened at the spiritual
level, because this is itself deprived of the divine salt, of the
divine food, of "blood"; so the psyche is deprived of its
proper food, which should come from the spirit, because the spirit
no longer feeds it, but feeds off it instead."
"At
these times the psyche turns towards what can provide a certain
dietary supplement. It
takes refuge in matter. So
we see that strange phenomenon of a complex world, the world of the
psyche, caught up with the elements - which leave it hungry and
arouse negative emotions. Diseases
inevitably appear. The
spirit, saturated with activity
of the psyche, brings anxiety; how can a soul which eats its body
not set loose diseases! What
then can we say of the body which, instead of being the sun, the
radiance, the nourishment of the cosmos, turns towards the cosmos in
a way that uses it more and more! Matter, finding nothing lower than itself to serve as food,
becomes anaemic; the doors of destruction and death open before it;
the only food offered is nothingness."
