O’s recognition of the need for a method

How does one achieve this reversal?  The Christian inner teaching gives a whole armoury of direct ‘methods’ for working on this, including self-remembering, and the noetic method, a  special form of prayer.   Ouspensky referred to this as a ‘method’.  O’s students eventually found the Indian version, but remained unaware that the almost identical esoteric Christian method was still available in Greece.

There was one exception.  At the end of the war one lone student of  O made contact with O's friend, the hermit Father Nikon on Mount Athos.   Fr. Nikon got this student, Gerald Palmer, to publish the Philokalia, one of the main books that introduced the Athonite method - the Jesus prayer - to the English speaking world.   The problem is that although the methods are almost identical, they differ in certain important respects.

  • The Indian method, as taught in the West (without the preliminary preparation that goes with it in India,) acts in the head and leads to just that fatalism which is characteristic of the eastern mentality.  If it leads to an awakening, the master inherits a house in which the servants are still in a state of revolt.
  • The Christian method, prayer of the heart, is intended to act elsewhere than in the head.

If practiced in the head it leads to the same fatalistic detachment.  If practiced in the heart, as it is supposed to be, the result is entirely different.  It intensifies the struggle with the psyche or Personality until the friction takes fire.  If combined with other work, including work on the unification of the lower centres, this fuses into one the second body, which eventually forms the basis of a stable consciousness. Note 1: Boris Mouravieff was a close friend of O and had some contact with G.   We eventually discovered the following facts about him:

  • That as a young man he had been in Kronstadt at the time of Father John, who by his effect on people was clearly a true (i.e.' conscious') elder.
  • That he had worked for two years with the Mevlivi Dervishes, with their acceptance, but never became a Sufi.
  • That he had taught the system as developed in his Gnosis trilogy in the South of France in the 1930's.
  • That he had taught and published the system in Switzerland and France in the 1950's and 1960's.
  • That in the book Gnosis he intentionally used certain terminology create by G and O, although it was not at first clear from where he had obtained his version of the 'system,' since it differed from G's and O's statements in several important details. Among other things, it showed links to Christian belief and tradition that neither of those teachers had admitted to.
