What about modern man?

In those of the first kind, as I understand it, the dikaios, the righteous, those who truly and deeply love God, it simply goes on, and in a few years it leads through successive stages to what the Eastern church calls theosis - 'divinisation'. Some are born at this third step. Some come to it slowly through a particular kind of suffering and under the scourge of what is correctly known as the Fear of God. But however they come to this point, once they reach it, prayer goes freely, as described by Palamas in passages like the following: "In the case of those who have made progress in hesychasm, all this occurs without painful effort, and without the need to think about it, for the complete entry of the soul within itself produces it spontaneously. As patience is a fruit of love ('for love bears all,' and we have been taught to practice patience with all our force to come to love), so it happens here."

"The cause" of this education "is the fear of God." 33 This brings to birth unceasing prayer to God in compunction,34 accompanied by obedience to the gospel commandments. Once reconciliation with God is re-established through prayer and the fulfilment of the commandments, the fear becomes love. "Then the sorrows of prayer are transformed into joy, and this leads to the appearance of the flower of illumination. Like a perfume from this flower, knowledge of the mysteries of God is then given to those who can retain it. This is education and this is true knowledge. A man addicted to the love of vain philosophy, wrapped up in its figures and its theories, never sees even the first glimmer of this, which is the Fear of God."
