A solution
So, as suggested earlier, we cannot simply eliminate thought. Indeed, although it seems we may have more thoughts than men of other times and other cultures - even if this is sometimes true, it is not an absolute. But there are two things we need to change in relation to our thoughts:
We need to change our attitude to the content of our psyche: to thoughts, feelings, impulses and perceptions etc. This change of attitude is, of course, the basis of the approach to prayer that is based on a change of attitude to self.
And even before this, we need to change that content of our psyche. This relates to any spiritual methods, including what we called the dialogue approach to prayer.
The problem of our attitude to the content of our psyche is common to all cultures. The second, greater problem is that content itself, and this content is specific, some of it belongs to our culture, some comes from our family, some seems to come from the far past. We cannot find any truly original thoughts. The thoughts we have, and the larger part of the content of our psyche, are not chosen by us, but in a sense parasitic; they are imposed on us. In general, they represent within us the culture within which we live.
This Indian method works because whatever actions we do intentionally, whether they entail physical or mental activity, or both, will involve our psyche in specific actions that modify its content. It will be necessary to gather and
analyse information, to plan and organize things in advance and, once we have begun work, continually to reorganize as different stages of the external activity have to be begun. This conflicts with the common illusion about spirituality mentioned at the beginning of this chapter: the common contemporary belief that, to keep the mind free for spirituality, we should not think. This is not only impossible, but is exactly opposite to the real solution, which has something of Alice Through The Looking Glass in it.
