THE BARBARIAN WITHIN US

and the growth of self-knowledge

A revised extract from Robin Amis' book 'A Different Christianity.'

On the path to healing the psyche, you can begin by asking yourself again now: "What am I ? Who am I ?" Be honest! You are not really sure who you are, since Western man looks for his 'Self' in the wrong place, and because of this we also misunderstand the nature of consciousness. These confusions open the psyche to harmful delusions and destructive mental processes, and it is these 'barbarians' in everybody's minds which damage our lives. These uncontrolled thoughts and feelings marched across Europe, Africa, half of Asia and half of Russia in the 1940's. In the past ten years, this same balkanisation of the mind has destroyed parts of the area geographically known as the Balkans. And if we do not do something about it, these uncontrolled assumptions and delusions will overthrow modern society from within.

The various philosophical, religious, psychological and social implications of this analysis will be developed on some of these pages and extended into a series of home-courses which will then be backed by seminars and short residential schools whenever enough people can get together.
