Series 1: the way of theosis Our first series of 1 hour video-lectures, based on readings from the book Theosis, and given by Robin Amis, Director of Praxis Research Institute and Author of A Different Christianity, (pub. 1995 State University of New York - SUNY) from his new book The Way of Theosis, now nearing completion.
AN INNER CLIMATE FOR INDIVIDUAL INNER GROWTH Inner Christianity is not only a spiritual method that works on the individual ‘from within’ instead of from the exterior, so that it builds defences against the pressure of the world into the individual psyche, instead of depending on the walls and organisation of a monastery, but it achieves this by exactly the method which originally gave rise to the idea of working from within: it functions through the transmission of spiritual energies that appear to arise inside the individual, yet not only do they bring stillness to our inner life, but they also have the surprising effect of making us more inwardly visible to ourselves. These energies are therefore both the cause and the result of the whole process of spiritual growth. The formation of the individual Magnetic Centre, the integrating core of psychological ascesis, is primarily the result of time given to noetic prayer or prayer of the heart, but is made much easier by certain forms of temporary community activity in which participants come together in love and silence of a kind which encourages and enables them to develop a temporary state hesychia or inner stillness, also known as apatheia - once called passionlessness, a form of self-control. By observing and remembering our efforts to maintain this state, we can learn very slowly how to maintain the same state when we are alone and face to face with everyday life. |
